Abstract

The paper discussed the hazards that are prevalent in a typical secondary school science laboratory. It also investigated the safety condition of science laboratories in Ekiti state. The study was an empirical research based on descriptive research design. The sample for the study consisted of 120 science teachers and 200 science students randomly selected from the senior secondary schools in Ekiti state, Nigeria. A questionnaire titled “Analysis of Hazards and Safety in Science Laboratory” was used to gather information for the study. Four research questions were generated while three hypotheses were formulated. The four research questions were answered using descriptive statistics of frequency counts and percentages. The hypotheses were tested through an inferential statistics of analysis of variance at 0.05 significance level. The result of findings showed that there are hazards in the science laboratories with little or no precaution being taken. Recommendations were proffered on ways to play safe in the laboratories during experimental work.
